Each season has its produce favorites that you can look forward to throughout the year. This spring, consider shopping for foods in season to spark a new habit with long lasting benefits.

Shopping and eating seasonally has a number of perks that include:

  1. Reducing pesticide consumption

  2. Foods are more nutrient-dense

  3. The food is less expensive

  4. The produce tastes better

  5. It’s better for the environment

So what should you stock your fridge with this spring? Here are some options that pack a nutritional punch and are extremely versatile.

Spring Greens

Think kale and spinach! Tori Jensen, Registered Dietitian for ah.mi says that these are her spring must-haves!  “Look for these nutrient dense greens at your local farmers market. They are loaded with vitamins A, C, E, and K, potassium, folate, calcium, and iron. Vitamins A, C, and E are powerful antioxidants that protect your body at the cellular level.” explains Jensen.

Greens can fit into a healthy lifestyle with ease, at any meal and adds fiber and nutrition to your dish in a pinch. “Fiber acts as a prebiotic, nourishing the good bacteria in your gut. A flourishing gut microbiome can improve mood, decrease inflammation, and support immunity. Throw spinach in ah.mi’s Clean Green smoothie, sauté kale in Tara’s Top of the Mornin’, or try an ah.mi member fave, Tini’s Go-To Kale Salad.” says Tori.

Lemons

Lemons are their juiciest from winter into early summer. Whether you are adding to a dressing or marinade or simply splashing some juice into your water, lemons are so good for you. Lemons offer vitamin C, folate and potassium. Add some zest to your favorite dessert, drink or dinner recipe. Want a recipe suggestion? Try these lemon cookies!

Peas

Peas are loved by kids and adults alike. They can be made into a spread for the entire family to enjoy. Don’t overthink the preparation process – keep it easy. This pea dip recipe only requires four ingredients. Peas are packed with a good source of vitamins C, E and Zinc. If you are looking to ward of any illness it’s coupled with other antioxidants that help to strengthen the immune system.

Strawberries

The peak season for strawberries is April so get ready to stock up. They provide a source of vitamin C, manganese and rich in antioxidants. Strawberries are known for their heart health benefits and the ability to help control blood sugar. In the mood for a smoothie? Try making a Paleo Strawberry Coconut Smoothie!

Know that the spring is abundant when it comes to fresh produce. There are so many other delicious items you can add to your shopping list next time you hit up the farmers market, but this list is a great starting point!
