I am quite attached to my chocolate berry protein smoothies of late. Chalk it up to pregnancy, being a creature of habit, or simply a smoothie-lover, but the concoction has become a staple in my diet over the past few months. So when I thought about going without them during a week at the beach, I just couldn’t fathom it (dramatic, I know). Fortunately, I have my Ninja Fit Personal Blender that I use on a daily basis, and it is the perfect appliance to travel with.
Driving to the beach and staying in a house is much more conducive to bringing food from home versus if you were flying and staying in a hotel (although if you are checking bags, I imagine that would help). I prepped some items before leaving, packing them in a big cooler with other perishables. The recipe for this smoothie is minimal and straightforward – only requiring four to five ingredients – so it doesn’t take much forethought. With a few simple steps, you can have your own smoothie kit while you travel.
I pre-sliced some local zucchini right before we left, throwing it in a large plastic bag. When we got to the house, I put the whole bag in the freezer for the week.
Along with the ingredients (see full compilation list below) and a travel blender, I also packed both a bag of chocolate and vanilla protein powder (I love Be Well By Kelly and Truvani brands). My family all has smoothies every day, so I wanted to make sure I had enough.
I was able to fit some frozen blueberries in our cooler, and I also brought a big container of strawberries, which I sliced and froze upon our arrival.
Even though it does take some planning, being able to have my smoothies at the beach really hit the spot! I like to top them with something for some added crunch, either my homemade granola, or one of my favorite blood sugar balancing cereals: Catalina Crunch Honey Graham.
How to take your smoothies on vacation
What to pack
- Travel blender (or ensure there is a blender where you are staying)
- Protein powder of choice
- Dairy-free milk of choice (I packed Malk unsweetened almond milk. You can also get some where you are going, or use water)
- Bag of pre-sliced zucchini (that you throw in the freezer upon arrival)
- Frozen berries of choice (or bring and freeze upon arrival)
- Plastic bags (to use for freezing if needed)
- Straws (if needed)
Depending on where you are staying, and the grocery options nearby, you can probably get a lot of this list at a local store. I just knew we wouldn’t be grocery shopping for a couple of days, and what the market does have on hand is kind of bare bones, so I took it upon myself to bring ingredients.
Happy summer fellow smoothie lovers!
