3 Simple Ways To Honor Your Mental Health

Green smoothies, hydration, regular exercise…all are excellent ways to honor and support your overall health. However, what are some ways you can specifically honor your mental health? 

Below are three tips to keep in mind as you carve out a lifestyle that can support your mental health. 

Continue to take time for yourself: This is a great opportunity to discover new things about yourself. When was the last time you asked yourself “What do I enjoy?” “What makes me happy?” These are heart to heart conversations you should be having with yourself in order to prioritize your well-being. Once you have nailed down what brings you joy, make those things a part of your life on a regular basis. It could range from taking long walks to listening to your favorite podcast, whatever it is it should bring you joy. Laugh: The saying is true, laughter is the best medicine. The act of laughing helps to reduce the stress chemicals in your brain while helping to increase the amount of oxygen that is flowing throughout your body including your brain! A good chuckle can turn a negative experience into a positive one while brightening your day. Shifting your mindset allows you to see life from a different perspective and find laughter in unexpected ways. Who is a friend or family member that never fails at making you laugh? Or find a funny podcast or YouTube video to do the trick!

Learn something new: Keeping the brain engaged can help to boost self-confidence and self-esteem. Whether it’s learning a new language, taking a workshop, or reading a book, the act of learning can support the sense of purpose. If you are learning in a group setting it can create a stronger connection with others and foster a sense of support.  According to the NHS (National Health Service) there are several ways to bring learning into your life even if you think you don’t have time. Try one of the following to get you started:

  • Try whipping up a new recipe for dinner, it doesn’t have to be complicated. A simple recipe like healthy fries is a great way to get started.
  • Challenge yourself by taking on a new task either at work, school or a community group you belong to. However if this creates more stress in your life don’t be afraid to scale back. 
  • DIY projects are a great way to learn something new and have fun at the same time. Even if it doesn’t turn out the way you want, the simple act of learning and trying offers huge benefits.

People that take on learning something new have proven to have a better sense of self-worth and are able to cope with stress better.

Improving your mental health takes commitment and is an ongoing process. Take your time and you will eventually create a routine that suits your needs.
