As human beings, we are hard-wired to perceive the negative. When I was health coaching, so often my clients would focus on where they felt stuck instead of the positive changes they had made thus far (I talk more about this in an upcoming interview, stay tuned!). Taking baby steps towards your goals can lead to big change! But until you acknowledge yourself for the progress, and celebrate small wins, you might increase your chances for feeling defeated. Many people underestimate the role that mindset and the power of belief play in accomplishing what it is you want. And when we allow the past to dictate present circumstances and choices, we often hold ourselves back from moving forward.
This is all why I love to encourage visualization exercises. Not only do I do this reflection myself every six months or so, but it is one I had my health coaching clients do before even signing up to work with me. When you can envision what it is you want to achieve, and how you want to feel in achieving it, and then make decisions from that place, that is where true empowerment comes from!
