It’s Like Picking Up A Racket

By Sara McGlothlin

Is there something you have been wanting to do/try/pick back up as an adult, but have felt too intimidated to do so? Tennis comes to mind for me. I played growing up – roughly age 4 to 14 – but stopped once I got to high school. I remember my tennis pro telling me I had potential, but chose my social life instead.

Throughout my 20s and into my 30s, I always dabbled in the sport, but never played with any regularity. When my husband and I started dating, it was something we did occasionally for fun, heading to the public courts on a random sunny Saturday. I’ve always said I’m not a competitive person, but a competitive side of me comes out when we play. I’ve been playing for 30 years! There is no way I can let him beat me when he hasn’t been playing as long.

When we decided to join a club in 2019, we chose Westwood because of the tennis. We knew it would be a great way to ingratiate ourselves into a new social scene while getting some exercise. Thanks to Wild Card Wednesday, we finally took advantage of the amenities. Not only did we get some evening exercise, but we had so much fun and laughed along the way.

We had to cut our match short because of the time constraint, so called it a tie. He still has never beaten me, and it actually inspired me to look more into the program, and book a private lesson the next week.

After our game, we headed to the bar to grab a couple of drinks and order dinner to-go. We put Mason in the kid’s club for the first time, and wanted to take full advantage of our alone time.

I was so excited when my lesson rolled around. I felt a little rusty at first, but eventually got into the swing of things (pun intended!). The pro was able to tell me which clinics would fit from here, and I’m even thinking of joining a league. That 30-minute lesson was the most cardio I’ve gotten in a year and a half! I had actually packed some workout clothes in case I wanted to squeeze in some more exercise before heading home, but realized I didn’t need to.

Without Wild Card Wednesday, we may never have played, and I’m so glad we did!
